Elegant Stokesley lies alongside the River Leven, close to the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Although an ancient town with a market charter dating from 1223, Stokesley appears to have been almost completely rebuilt during the early 18th Century. The town has a distinguished wide cobbled main street lined with Georgian and Regency buildings, with open spaces at either end.
The River Leven runs just behind the main street and is crossed by the Pack Horse Bridge, dating from the 17th Century and once the only crossing into the town. Just off the market place stands the 14th Century Church of St Peter and St Paul, with woodwork carved by Robert Thompson’s craftsmen, otherwise known as the “Mouseman of Kilburn”
The Friday market attracts visitors to its colourful stalls and there are also many high quality eating places to be enjoyed. A popular agricultural show takes place on the outskirts of the town every September. Ample free car parking is available in Stokesley, within easy walking distance of the town centre.
