Seven miles to the east of York lies the town of Stamford Bridge. There has been a settlement here, and perhaps more significantly a crossing over the river Derwent, since at least Roman times. As an important crossing point the town will have provided hospitality for many centuries, and still has four pubs to this day. The old stone bridge that now spans the river dates from 1727, and is a grade II listed building. In medieval times there was a wooden bridge, and of course there was a bridge at Stamford Bridge in 1066 when the battle just before that at Hastings took place there. The Battle of Stamford Bridge was fought on September 25 1066 between the forces of King Harold Godwineson of England and those of Danish leader Harald Hardrada, helped by King Harold’s traitorous brother Tostig. The English overwhelmed the Danes and secured a decisive victory, but then had to make a forced march south again having just covered 180 miles in four days to get to Stamford Bridge and surprise their enemies. The exhaustion of those who fought at the battle on September 25 and Hastings on October 14 must have been a factor in Harold’s defeat. Two other landmarks dominate the town of 3,394 inhabitants. The first is another crossing, the disused railway viaduct, built in 1847, now serving as part of a cycle route. The second is an ancient mill that dates from 1591, that has now found a new use as luxury flats.
