Slingsby in North Yorkshire, on the B1257 between Malton and Helmsley, could well be used as the model for a proper English village, ticking all the boxes that visitors and residents alike would want to be ticked. First, the holy trinity of the living village is found there: it has a church, a pub, and a shop. It can go further than this, with its own church, a ruined castle, and a Georgian Hall (now a B&B) among its stone cottages and sturdy houses. It even has a village green complete with maypole! Not bad for a place that at the last census had a population of 634. The church is All Saints, relatively modern as it was built on the site of its medieval forerunner, but with some Clayton and Bell stained glass to recommend it to the curious, and a font from earlier times. The churchyard has reminders of such times too, and is a particular haven of peace in an already quiet settlement. The pub is The Grapes, a real village pub with welcoming staff, substantial food and decent beer - what more could you ask? Slingsby’s castle was wrecked by the Roundheads as its owners, the Cavendish family, chose the wrong side in the Civil War. It was built by the Mowbrays, then owned by the Howard family for a time – Castle Howard, one of the most beautiful stately homes in the country is just a couple of miles or so south of the village, an easy trip for visitors not wanting to go too far. Further afield there is York with its many attractions, only thirty minutes’ drive by the main roads, though Slingsby is nicely situated on the back lanes of North Yorkshire and a spot of motoring along these might be more enjoyable, taking in the lovely Ryedale countryside.
