The tiny village of Scotton (with a population of just 283 at the 2001 census) sits a couple of miles north west of Knaresborough, easy to access from junction 47 of the A1(M). Scotton makes a good base for trips to Harrogate and Knaresborough, and the route to York is an easy one too. The river Nidd runs to the south of the village, and there are some beautiful woodland paths that take the walker along its banks. Near the old flax mill there is an impressive weir to add interest to a stroll in the countryside. The Nidd is a healthy river, providing those in search of sport with the opportunity in season to catch trout, grayling, barbel and pike, as well as smaller coarse species. Scotton’s great claim to fame is its links to Guy Fawkes. The York-born conspirator spent some of his boyhood in the village after his widowed mother remarried the delightfully named Dionis Bainbridge, a Catholic. Guy Fawkes may well have married in Scotton – there is an ongoing historical debate about this – the lady being named as Maria Pulleyn, believed to be related to the one-time owners of Scotton Hall. The village has the Guy Fawkes Arms pub in memory of the gunpowder plotter, and he is honoured by the village tradition on bonfire night, when there are fireworks and a great fire, but no guy atop the blaze.
