Oswaldkirk is a tiny village standing on the southern rim of the North York Moors National Park. In 2002 the population was said to be just 219, living in 97 households, though the village is still large enough to support a pub and have two working churches. The church of St Oswald gives the village its name, and has been on this site since before the Normans arrived, though the original Saxon wooden construction has left no traces, and what can be seen today is largely Norman, with some later additions and renovations. The church itself is named for St Oswald of Worcester, an Anglo-Saxon King martyred by pagans in 642. The village is an out of the way if not isolated one, the nearest major route being the A170 Thirsk to Scarborough route, but it is well placed for touring the Hambleton Hills to the northwest, and the Howardian Hills to the south, as well as attractions such as Rievaulx Abbey, Duncombe Park, and Shandy Hall, all within five miles, and only slightly further afield the magnificent Castle Howard. The village pub –The Malt Shovel - is a rather grand old building which was originally built in the 17th century as a new manor house after William Moore acquired the village in 1661, though he soon built the far more imposing Oswaldkirk Hall to replace it. A third building of note is the Rectory, an elegant structure extended at the start of Victoria’s reign.
