The market town of Malton is only just in North Yorkshire; its conjoined twin-town of Norton across the other side of the Derwent is in the East Riding. There has been a settlement in Malton since at least Roman times, and there are the remains of a Roman fort in the town plus exhibits at the museum to remind visitors of this aspect of Malton’s history. With around 4,000 residents Malton has the amenities expected of a small town, its shopping facilities benefiting too from the influx of tourists. Saturday is market day, and there is a monthly farmers’ market too. A range of attractions can be found outside the town: Eden Camp at the northern edge of Malton was a POW camp during WWII, and now houses innovative reminders of those days that will fascinate children, and an assault course that will exhaust them. Flamingo Land theme park is ten minutes drive north along the A169. And the beautiful Castle Howard, where much of Brideshead Revisited was filmed, lies about four miles west along country roads. Further afield there are the beaches at Scarborough and Filey. Access to Malton is easy: it sits on the A64, about 17 miles north east of York; and is on the rail line to Scarborough, with a regular train service from York and beyond.
