Once a market town for much of coastal North Yorkshire, Hunmanby still has its market cross as a reminder of those prosperous times. It was moved down the administrative scale from town to village in the late 19th century, but it is still a substantial place, and one of several in the country to claim the title of Britain’s largest village. Hunmanby has benefited from its location just a couple of miles from Filey, in that it retains a train station at the edge of the village on the line to the coast, whereas the road which once brought coach traffic through the then town is now a mile away from the village – the best of both worlds in other words. Because of its size Hunmanby has the great requisites for vibrant village life: church, pub, school and shops. The church, all Saints, is well worth a look, dating from the 12th century, though with plenty of additions and alterations having been made throughout the centuries since. The pub is the White Swan Hotel, once a coaching stop but now a pleasant village local with accommodation. Visitors can find a bed too at Wrangham House, a Georgian vicarage that is now a country house hotel, or at the Orchard Farm Holiday Village. There is plenty of history to be explored in the village. In the centre there is the 11th century Low Hall thought to have been used by members of the de Gant family to whom William the Conqueror gave the village. There are signs to be found too of the Norman motte and bailey fortification from this epoch, appropriately enough on Castle Hill. But Hunmanby predates the Normans by quite some time. The name is Saxon, shown in Domesday as Hundemanbi, meaning Farm of the Hound Men, believed to relate to the hunting of wolves on the nearby Yorkshire Wolds by men from this area. Archaeological finds take the site still further back, a landslip in 1907 opening up a burial site from before the Roman invasion, complete with chariot and horse.
