One of the prettiest villages in a particularly pretty part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Grassington has a huge amount to offer visitors both within the village (technically a town, as it was granted a market charter in 1282) and without. There are good facilities in Grassington, thanks largely to its year round tourist trade. There are several pubs, a restaurant, shops and cafes. For those who have never had the opportunity to try the fiendishly tricky game of crown green bowls (like lawn bowls but on ground with a rise in the middle and more borrows than a St Andrew’s green) there is a club able and willing, fixtures permitting, to hire the equipment to those ten years and older with suitably flat shoes. This Wharfedale village is charming, grey stone cottages predominating, with a small cobbled square and some quaint little alleys with equally quaint names. Once this was a lead mining area, with miners brought in from Derbyshire to open the mines when the potential was discovered, and for a time the textile industry was important here, but now it is dedicated to the many visitors who flock to the area throughout the year. Grassington is a thriving place with a lot of events to draw visitors (and draw them back for more), particularly an arts festival in the last two weeks of June that features some big names in music, comedy and poetry. In December there are Dickensian festivities in suitable settings. The nearby village of Kilnsey has an agricultural show in August, and offers pony trekking and fly fishing on the lakes there (also available on the River Wharfe), as well as the spectacular Kilnsey Crag. And of course there is no shortage of walking. The information centre in the village is a good starting point to find a suitable route – there are riverside strolls at one end of the spectrum, and at the extreme opposite there is the annual Fellsman Hike race held in May, over a 61 mile course involving more than 11,000 feet of climbing, much of it of course in the dark as competitors navigate their way home. In between there are many less demanding treks, including the Dales Way, and the Pennine Way passes just a few miles to the west of the village. Those planning a longer stay will not be short of things to do either, as within a ten mile radius there are a multitude of sights to be seen: Malham Cove; Stump Cross Caverns, Barden Tower, Bolton Priory, Parcevall Hall, and the lovely market town of Skipton complete with the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway.
