Escrick is a village of around 1,200 inhabitants, six miles directly south of York. Lying just off the A19 it is very easy to access, and makes a good centre for touring the nearby East Riding, for visits to York with all of its famous attractions, or to quieter but very pretty Selby. For those of a more sporting turn Escrick is handy for York races and, slightly further afield, Wetherby and even Pontefract. If you fancy the outdoors without subsidising bookmakers there is coarse fishing at a small farm facility a couple of miles south of the village, and two or three miles further than that the Skipwith Nature Trail. Escrick - the name is said to mean Ash Ridge - has been settled for a thousand years and more, with a manor house built in the area in medieval times, this building undergoing various incarnations, transformations and additions until its present elegant form was arrived at. The Hall is now Queen Margaret's School for Girls, with the extensive estate used for a variety of commercial and leisure purposes. Within the village there are those two essential components of English rural life, the pub - The Black Bull, noted locally for its food - and the church, St Helen's. In spite of what some might see as the handicap of being built in the mid-19th century, St Helen's is a very handsome classical building, managing to retain the comfortably organic air that makes churches so much more welcoming than rigid symmetry. There is a sturdy hexagonal baptistery beneath the rose window in the west end of the nave that catches the eye here, and the pleasant grey stone is as welcoming as the Yorkshire countryside around it.
