The village of Easington in North Yorkshire sits on the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park, some three miles from the rugged North Sea Coast. There has been a village here since at least early Saxon times – the name means farmstead of the sons or relatives of Esa – and it appears in the Domesday Book of 1089 as part of the manor of nearby Loftus. The Church of All Saints Easington, a Victorian gothic structure, has antecedents going back to pre-Norman times, the old church being rebuilt in 1772, and that version in turn being replaced in 1888. The village of Easington itself has a pleasant pub, the Tiger, and the fine accommodation of Grinkle Park, an ancient pile rebuilt in 1883. The area has plenty to offer for walkers: the Cleveland way runs close by, and the village of Boulby just a quick hike to the north of Easington has the highest cliffs in England, at 679 feet above sea level. But most visitors will use the village as the base for exploring the North York Moors to the south of Easington and Whitby a 13 mile drive along the A174. The pretty fishing village of Staithes a couple of miles along the road towards Whitby should not be rushed past, however, as it certainly repays a stop.
