The little village of Deighton lies about five miles south of York on the A19 between that venerable city and Selby. Though at the last census in 2001 the population was only 308, the village still retains a pub, The White Swan. This is gentle arable country, the loamy soil supporting wheat, potatoes, beet and barley, so it is perhaps no coincidence that a celebrated breeder of Clydesdale horses should be in the area. Deighton makes a good base for visiting York’s many attractions – the wonderful railway museum and the Jorvik Viking experience among them. York is a great shopping centre too, and conveniently close to the village is the MacArthur Glen shopping outlet. Closer to Deighton is Bell Hall, a brick built Queen Anne mansion just a mile or so to the west, a little before the River Ouse. There are plenty of country walks available in the area, either taking pot luck on the lanes thereabouts, or trying Skipwith Common Nature Trail a couple of miles south, just off the A19. Golfers visiting the area may wish to check out the possibilities at the three nearby courses: Swallow Hall just to the north east, the celebrated Fulford Club on the southern edge of York, and Pike Hills another mile or more west of Fulford.
