The village of Clapham sits at the very edge of the Dales National Park, and though it is only 16 miles from the coast of Lancashire at Carnforth, and 20 from Kendal in Cumbria, it is in the county of North Yorkshire. Clapham is a pretty settlement, with some solid stone cottages and a pub, The New Inn, that has been providing a stopping place for visitors since it was built as a coaching inn in 1776. Visitors wanting a quiet stroll will enjoy the village itself, but those with a more demanding appetite for exercise will find plenty nearby to interest them. Ingleborough, one of Yorkshire’s three peaks, is just two miles north of the village. Ingleborough Cave with its stalactites and stalagmites and Gaping Ghyll, where water drops 365 feet to the base of this daunting pot-hole, are both huge attractions in the area, but the existence of the Cave Rescue Organisation in the village should be a reminder that great care and proper equipment are needed when setting out to enjoy some of the district’s natural wonders. Those with an engineering bent will be interested by the lake above the village, created in the 19th century to feed the water turbine producing electricity for parts of the settlement. The local saw mill also has such a turbine, making use of the power of the water that over millennia has carved features into the countryside round about. Clapham Beck runs through the village itself, crossed by two foot and two road bridges. Clapham is just off the pretty A65 road, but it is also accessible by train, though travellers need to know that Clapham station is a mile south of the village proper.
