Burnsall is undoubtedly one of the prettiest villages in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, particularly noted for the beauty of its riverside setting, and of the bridge spanning the Wharfe there. For a settlement with a population of just 112 at the last census the village has a lot to recommend it to the visitor, not least its setting nestling in the fells, Burnsall Fell itself rising to 1,661 feet. Even before there was a bridge in the place there was probably a ferry to get travellers across the Wharfe, and an inn to lodge and restore them. The Red Lion is a nice mixture of styles, from the 16th century onwards, but even older are the cellars, said to date from the 12th century, and to be haunted by a poltergeist. The Church of St Wilfrid is equally ancient, and equally eclectic, with a pretty lych-gate. Indeed in the churchyard are some hog-back gravestones thought to be 10th century. The main building is perpendicular in style, largely 13th century, though the font is from the 11th. It was restored in the mid-Victorian era. The village’s most famous resident was Sir William Craven (actually born in Appletreewick a mile away), whose Dick Whittington life story saw him rise from poverty to being made Lord Mayor of London in 1611, returning to lavish his wealth on projects like the improvement of the church and the bridge, and the endowment of the Grammar School (now the primary school). Burnsall is a destination in itself, made for quiet contemplation, but for those with itchy feet there are plenty of attractions nearby: Bolton Abbey, Parcevall Hall gardens, Skipton, the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, and Stump Cross Caverns are all within a few miles.
