The village of Brotton near the North Yorkshire coast is a sizeable one, with a population of over 5,000. With its elevated position (the name means farmstead on the brow of a hill - Warsett Hill in fact) providing defensive advantages it is not surprising that the area was settled even before Roman times. Brotton was a fairly small settlement, though with an elegant if simple Georgian church, St Margaret's, until the discovery of Ironstone in the area led to the opening of various mines, though those days are long past now. With the A174 passing the village it is easy to get to, though plenty of visitors here will actually walk along the coast rather than drive, taking in Whitby and Staithes with their maritime history along the way. There is good walking too in the nearby North York Moors, and Guisborough on the edge of the moors with its ancient priory is one of the main draws for visitors to the area. Having a healthily sized population there are good amenities in the area, including a number of pubs in the village itself, a pleasant hotel converted from an old farmstead, and a golf course.
