The historic market town of Bedale can be dated back to Saxon times – there is evidence of the incorporation of elements of the 9th century church in the current medieval building – and possibly back to Roman times. Just a couple of miles to the west of the A1, Bedale is a great place to stop en route, and a better one to spend a few days in, exploring the town and its surroundings – it sits between the Dales National Park to the west and North York Moors to the east. Granted its market charter by Henry III in 1251, Bedale retains a Tuesday market to this day, with the ancient market cross looking on still. It has Bedale Beck running through the town, with plenty to see during pleasant walks along its banks. For those preferring more leisurely sightseeing the Wensleydale Railway runs from the town to Leyburn, offering beautiful views of the valley without the hassle of driving. Much of the architecture is Georgian, but there are elements from earlier times to be seen as well, including what may well be a unique building, The Leech House, a small structure used by the local apothecary to keep his precious leeches, the medieval cure-all. St Gregory’s church is largely 14th and 15th century, but it also has a few remnants of the Saxon church in its fabric. The pele tower there tells a tale too – this construction is typical of the small fortresses built in medieval times as a place of refuge against the marauding Scots. Nearby there is an excellent golf course, and the 85 acres of Thorp Perrow Arboretum with its falconry, and worth seeing too are the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey where it is thought Wensleydale cheese, beloved of Wallace and Gromit and of all right-thinking cheese lovers was first made.
