On the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Austwick is a pretty little village of fewer than 500 inhabitants. The settlement is easy to get to, just off the A65, so within a scenic drive of the M6 near Lancaster or the M65 from Nelson. The place is surrounded by lovely countryside of interest to diverse groups: amateur geologists and lovers of the unusual will find the so-called erratic boulders on the hills fascinating - dropped by the last ice age, and left on limestone 'stalks'; and there is limestone pavement nearby, beloved of geography teachers everywhere. The old drover paths and lanes have left a legacy to be enjoyed by walkers and cyclists. And the sheer beauty of the crags and small fields will appeal to anyone with a soul. A couple of miles or so away to the north are Ingleborough Cave and Gaping Gill; to the south there is good fishing, especially late in the season, in the River Wenning. In Austwick itself there is a pub to refresh the body and a 19th century chapel for the spirit, with the grey stone cottages and immaculate greens providing a wonderful backdrop to life here. Here too there is a renowned country hotel as a base for exploring the area. This was once a thriving textile area, but today the economy is based on agriculture and tourism, though as yet it is relatively quiet compared to say the Lakes only an hour or so away.
