Ampleforth is a pretty Yorkshire village, on the edge of the North Yorkshire National Park, home to over eight hundred and eighty people. Honey coloured limestone cottages nestle amongst glorious countryside which entice walkers relentlessly, the Saxon church of St Hilda has Medieval stained glass windows and the remains of the old Saxon Market Cross outside. The area is shrouded in history from the evocative Chalk Horse carefully carved by Victorian Soldiers into the hillside nearby, and the Medieval Fortress of Helmsley Castle which rewinds time in an instant, with Visitors Centre and impressive ditches. 18th Century Shandy Hall will appeal to book lovers, or on a grander scale Nunnington Hall on the banks of the River Rye, has elegant rooms, impressive tapestries, and fine furniture, outside there are 8 acres of grounds, wildflower meadow, orchards and tea garden which is sure to please. Artists and Photographers are bewitched with magnificent arches of 12th Century Rievaulx Abbey which shares it's intriguing tale in their Museum, or fast forward to the 1940's and enter the fabulous James Herriot Museum in Skeldale House, where Television room sets, and living quarters of this well loved Vet is on display, as well as fascinating examples of all things veterinary.
