The village of Rudgwick lies close to the Surrey border in the Low Weald country 6 miles (10km) west of Horsham. The name is derived from the Old English - hryer = ridge & wic = farm. Rudgwick was a farming and woodland community until the 13th century (it is not mentioned in the Domesday Book) when a church was built and the foundations of the village were formed. The present church - Holy Trinity - sits on the top of a rise and dates mainly from the 14th century, the south wall of the nave is probably Norman and the sturdy, buttressed tower is C13th, but the building was re-done in the C14th with a north aisle and new chancel. There is a fine group of tile hung cottages in-front of the church screening it from the road, many of them timber-framed; indeed, there are around 90 timber-framed buildings in the parish some dating back to the C14th. In the C16th & C17th there was a iron furnace and forge at nearby Dedisham and brick making has a long history in the area. In 1985, whilst digging clay for the local brick works, the bones of a rare dinosaur were found, they are now in the Natural History Museum in London. Rudgwick has always been a rural community and travel by road was especially difficult along the clay tracks. Things improved in 1810 when the road from Guildford to Horsham was built; the railway arrived in 1865 only to be severed by the Beeching Axe 100 years later, the trackway survives as part of the Downslink bridleway. The former station site is now the Medical Centre.
