This pretty village in East Sussex 10 miles from Royal Tunbridge Wells with it’s past firmly in smuggling and the notorious Mayfield gang renowned for ‘Owling’ (smuggling of wool). With delicious countryside to be explored and many black and white houses in the village from yester year, the unusual high street with raised red brick pavements unique shops and several old Inns, begs to be photographed or sketched, an ideal place to be. Mayfield has links with the past as far back as Saxons, when St Dunstan built a wooden church and a home next door, which is now a girls school. The church was replaced by Normans and parts remain after it was rebuilt due to a fire, it is definitely worth viewing. The River Rother in all it’s glory together with the ’Cuckoo Trail’ are close and promise enjoyment. The surrounding areas have many tiny Saxon flint churches, Bayham Abbey ruins and breathtaking countryside. A few miles away Tunbridge Wells is home to historic Hever Castle, and Bewl Water where fishing and sailing are the order of the day.Mayfield serves it’s history of smugglers and Saxons together with her beauty satisfying the hungriest of appetites.
