Shortly due to become the worst kept secret on the South Coast, this unique town is home to Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet, an exquisite cliff-top country park, a lavishly restored pier and the newly resurgent White Rock Theatre. Beyond the historic castle ruins, the museums, art galleries and cliff railways, lies a thriving cosmopolitan culture of cafes, bars and clubs. Visitors are virtually indistinguishable from residents in this welcoming community where every evening is rich with excitement and promise.
The town benefits from an exhaustive year-long programme of events. The Jack-in-the-Green festival of Morris Dancing (May 3-6) is notorious for its wild, vivid colours and bizarre pagan rituals in which the 'jack' is slain and the spirit of Summer released for another year. The world famous Hastings Beer Festival has won acclaim for its irresistible blend of live music and local liquor. The Coastal Currents festival is an extraordinary showcase for some of the most innovative artists in Britain. The Old Town Carnival rivals the New Orleans Mardi Gras for extravagance and spectacle. Hastings Week, perhaps the biggest event of the year, sees the town remember its roots with a series of activities and shows related to the famous battle culminating in Hastings Day on October 14 (the anniversary).
The town has won favour with all kinds of invaders, from the vengeful Normans of 1066 to many celebrated artists and writers including JMW Turner and Charles Dickens. More recently, it was adopted as the prime location for the new ITV1 wartime detective series 'Foyle's War' which stars Michael Kitchen, James Fox and Charles Dance and will be aired this winter.
