Close to the River Medway this village has oodles of places to see and stay, chose from The Roebuck a 17th century House with oak beams, or how about Ashdown Park Hotel built in 1867 a magnificent mansion overlooking a majestic lake, What about a 15th Century Posting Inn that had a strong association with smugglers the Chequers Inn. The village reaches far back in time with historic buildings and The Hanging Tree which stands at the foot of Wall Hill, highwaymen were hanged on this tree following a robbery in 1801. If you yearn for the cobwebs to be blown away in the great outdoors, Ashdown Forest created 900 years ago as a Hunting Park with Deer and Wild Boar will definitely do the trick. Apart from walking through the enchanting heathland and woodland there is a special place within the Forest, The Hundred Acre Wood ……where “Winnie The Pooh” spent many hours, in A.A Milnes story, you can still play “Pooh Sticks” from the bridge or visit Pooh Corner and the famous shop where everything “Winnie” resides. If taking to the water appeals then Weir wood Reservoir where fishing, sailing and bird watching promises total satisfaction.
