The village of Bosham lies on an irregular peninsula jutting out into Chichester Harbour, it is a dead end between two creeks, at the tip is Quay Meadow. Shore Road runs alongside the water and is liable to flood at high tide, with the High Street set back running parallel to it. It was from the Quay that Harold set off on his ill-fated trip to see William of Normandy in 1064, Harold's father, Earl Godwin, had his main base here and, like Harold, is purported to be buried in the area and King Cnut probably had a palace in Bosham. Holy Trinity church is said to be built on a Roman basilica - the chancel arch (one of the best preserved Saxon arches in Britain) is built on the bases of a Roman arch. The Saxon tower was topped out in the 15th C and has a shingled broach spire; there is a 12th C crypt as well as an Early English east window. It is one of the best early churches in England and well worth a visit. Although there are few other surviving early buildings there are many pleasant houses and cottages either 17th C thatch or 18th C brick and tile; the Anchor Bleu became an Inn in 1740 and the Millstream is a much extended 18th C hotel. The Congregational church was built in 1837. Fishing was an important industry and there was a thriving oyster trade - second only to Whitstable - with up to forty boats operating out of the quay. The fishing boats are long gone and pleasure boating now dominates; birdwatching is also popular in the area. Bosham show`s its best when viewed from across the bay, it`s no wonder the Bosham has attracted many artists keen to capture this historic village.
