Once a quiet Bedfordshire village, Leagrave is now at the middle of the Luton-Dunstable conurbation, the place officially a suburb of Luton. It enjoys excellent transport links, with the A505 trunk road running east-west right by it and junction 11 of the M1 on the doorstep; it also has train links with a station on the Bedford-London line, and of course London Luton Airport is only a short drive away. Those transport links go a long way back, Icknield Way running through the settlement which probably originally developed thanks to the River Lea there offering a prehistoric trade route. With a population of more than 12000 Leagrave has a full range of schools and the retail and accommodation facilities that would be expected of such a place. Many of its residents commute to London and to nearer urban centres including Stevenage and Bedford thanks to its rail and road links. For visitors attractions like Luton Hoo, the Chilterns, Someries Castle, Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade are all within very easy reach, as of course is Leagrave itself for UK travellers. The most striking building in Leagrave is the Church of St Luke, relatively modern but with an un-churchy elegance.
