Houghton Regis in Bedfordshire is an ancient settlement, findings made in the district indicating Roman habitation. Its setting near the Chilterns explains the first part of the town’s name – Houghton meaning farmstead at the spur of a hill; the Regis comes from being a royal manor under Edward the Confessor – regal ownership continued after the Conquest. For centuries Houghton Regis was a village, though early in the Norman era it gained a market. In the 20th century, however, it expanded as an overspill town; there are plans for further expansion north of the settlement up to 2021. Evidence of its antiquity remains including All Saints’ Church with its sturdy Norman tower and the elegant Houghton Hall. With a population of around 18,000 Houghton Regis has the retail facilities expected of such a town, with a small shopping centre and the usual hostelries and eateries. Sited between Dunstable and Luton many of its inhabitants commute to those centres, though as the A505 which runs through the town feeds into junction 11 of the M1 there is easy access to and from the place for longer journeys – indeed with Luton’s Airport a one motorway-junction hop away some very long journeys can begin there.
