Woodley is a suburban town, though it is debatable as to which town it is a suburb of, standing as it does between Reading and Wokingham (the matter further confused by Woodley being in a Reading Parliamentary constituency but within Wokingham’s local government reach). The town’s name means clearing in the wood, hinting at a rural past that for some is within living memory, for until the interwar period Woodley was a village of around 1000 souls; now it has 26,000, with all the schools, retail facilities and hospitality options that would be expected to serve a town of that size. In that interwar period Woodley became a noted aviation centre, its aerodrome visited by some of that field’s greatest name – Douglas Bader, Charles Lindbergh and Amy Johnson among them. That period of Woodley’s history is celebrated in the Museum of Berkshire Aviation to the east of the settlement. The Thames runs just to the north of Woodley, the river at Sonning there a spot beloved of Jerome K. Jerome. The less imposing River Loddon flows through the town. Access to Woodley by car is made easy by the A329(M) which branches off to its southern edge at junction 10 of the M4; or by the A4 Reading-Maidenhead road crossing its northern side; alternatively the train stations at Earley and Twyford are a short taxi trip from the town; and Heathrow is easily reached via the M4.
