Inkpen in West Berkshire is a village of fewer than a thousand inhabitants, but with a wealth of history and architectural interest. Newbury and Hungerford are roughly equidistant; the village reached via small country lanes, though junction 14 of the M4 is just 10 minutes away. The village itself stretches roomily over several of those lanes in spite of the hills which loom nearby – Walbury Hill at 974 feet the highest point in all of England’s chalk downs, its peak topped with an Iron Age fort. The village dates from Saxon times at the latest, and is probably far older than that. The late 17th century rectory was once visited by Versailles’ garden designer, who may have been impressed with the crocuses still to be seen in a large field, the flowers said to have been planted by Knights Templar to produce saffron. The church of St Michael dates from those times, though with many an alteration and ‘improvement’ since then. Several other elegant buildings in the settlement date from the 18th century. Two pubs, both with restaurants, serve the village and surrounds, The Crown and Garter on Inkpen Common with rooms too, and even an organic food shop – this is a foodie area with a monthly farmers’ market.
