Hungerford is a pretty riverside town in Berkshire near the borders of Wiltshire and Hampshire. This historic Market Town is a shoppers paradise with choices from the Open Market every Wednesday to many Antique shops, not least ‘The Arcade’ a covered emporium home to 7o stall units offering antique paintings, furniture, clocks, Edwardian linen and silver. The town is surrounded by open land, the ‘National Route For Cyclists’ passes through the town, with a choice of fly fishing or course fishing on the River Kennet. Or perhaps a glorious walk along the tow path skirting the ’Kennet & Avon Canal’ is more for you. The Canal was once an important trade route although today the pleasure crafts and Narrow Boats are more the order of the day, in fact why not climb aboard a traditional Barge that’s brightly painted with roses and castles ’The Rose of Hungerford’ an impressive barge and offers a short adventure. Historically the town has played it’s part in many a drama, was once an important Coaching stop and the many coaching Inns prove this point, not least the oldest ‘The Bear Inn’ has had it’s fair share of important visitors, James 1 passed the crown to William of Orange here, Queen Elizabeth 1 visited here, Charles 1 also used the Bear as his headquarters, although the town has been inhabited since the Stone Age, there is even remnants of a Bronze Age Building and a Roman Road. A few miles away is the wonderful ‘Crofton Pumping Station’ which houses two beam engines, one of them is the oldest beam Engine in the world, and regularly hisses into action still pumping, perched high on the edge of the canal, affording stunning views of gliding boats and the odd flash of brilliant blue as the Kingfisher dives.
