Earley in Berkshire has changed much over recent years, far more in the last century than it had over the preceding millennium. A mere hamlet or two when William the Conqueror had the Domesday Book prepared, it remained small until the 19th century, with a population of fewer than 500 in mid-century. Even in the 1930s it was home to fewer than 1000 residents. But either side of WWII it began to expand rapidly. The potential for growth was boosted with the arrival of the railway in 1863 which still serves the place today. Growth accelerated further in the late 1970s and beyond with the housing development of Lower Earley. In terms of governance Earley became a town in its own right in 1974, but some still see it as a suburb of Reading into which it flows westward. Evidence of older housing can be seen as you travel about the town, though the old manor made way for houses in 1960. Its lake remains, now a popular fishing spot and a place to observe birdlife including cormorants, ducks, geese and swans. Intelligent planning means a pleasant network of old paths remains to serve pedestrians and cyclists within the town. As would be expected of a place housing over 30000 it has a variety of schools, wide selection of shops, and the hostelries and eateries required by a prosperous area. Train services to Waterloo and Reading are accessed at either Earley or nearby Winnersh stations; and the M4 is a matter of minutes away.
