This sprawling Gloucestershire village was once the home town of JK Rowling, author of the world-famous Harry Potter stories. It is claimed that she based the character 'Dumbledore' on her headmaster at the local St Michael's School, Alfred Dunn. She is also said to have played 'witches and wizards' with her friends the Potter children. The village has more than a best selling author as its claim to fame. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, Winterbourne has plenty of history to attract the residents and visitors alike. The church of St Michael's dates from the 12th Century and is located in a green and open area on the fringes of the village, its spire visible from miles around. Inside the church is a magnificent stonework at the alter depicting the Last Supper and based upon the famous painting by the great Leonardo da Vinci. Although a lot of the surrounding countryside has been lost to development, there's still plenty of green areas to explore and a walk to the fields known as the 'Cloisters' gives one a fine view of the Frome Valley and the Winterbourne Viaduct which carries the railway over the River Frome. There's also a large duck pond, popular with ducks, swans, fishers and walkers alike.
