Dating back to Roman times, Portishead derives its name from 'port at the head of the river'. In fact the river water once came right up to the High Street and evidence can be seen on the old wall of where the boats would once have been moored. Over 5000 years ago the area was a marshy plain inhabited by Hippopotami and Elephants whose teeth have been excavated from time to time. The dominant architecture is Victorian, helping the town to retain much of its original charm. In 1836 a deep water dock was built to facilitate large ships involved in importing and exporting goods around the world. The dock was used extensively to carry coal to the power station that was once sited beside it. Since the closure of the Power Station in 1980, the dock has been well preserved and is now the centre of a new marina development. Areas of local interest include the Portishead coastline and the Lake Grounds, the town's main area of Parkland, was built around a 20th century artificial lake. Portsihead also boasts one of the last remaining public outdoor swimming pools in the United Kingdom. Also of interest is Battery Point, built to defend the Severn Estuary.
