The village of Falfield lies towards the southern end of the Berkeley Vale, 4 miles east of the River Seven & 3 miles north of Thornbury. The A38 runs through the village and Junction 14 of the M5 motorway is just to the east. The early history of Falfield is somewhat hazy, there is believed to have been an Anglo Saxon settlement nearby and there is some evidence of Roman activity in the area. By the sixteenth century Falfield was, in the main, an agricultural community and the village was home to Farmers, Weavers and Tailors. The area is dominated by Eastwood Park, once part of Thornbury Castle`s Deer Hunting Park, it came into the hands of the Jenkinson family in the 17th century; Robert Jenkinson - Earl of Liverpool - was Prime Minister from 1812 to 1828 lived at Eastwood Park. More recently it came into the hands of the Ministry of Defence, it is now a training and conference centre of the Department of Health. Heneage Court - possibly the old manor house - has gardens and woodland laid out by Edward Warren for Russell Thomas the then owner in 1913. In Mill Lane, The Mill occupies a site used by mills for several hundreds of years, other buildings of note in and around Falfield are; the medieval Green Farm; Heneage Farm and Sundayshill Farm of the 17th century and the Huntsman Inn also of the 17th century. The ancient Chapel of Rest was replaced by the present church, St.Georges, in 1860 on land given for the purpose by Sir George Jenkinson, it has a high pitched roof with a bell tower and early English style windows. The war memorial used to stand on an island at the junction of the A38 and Sundays Hill Lane but was moved to its present site in the 1960`s when the A38 was widened.
