Bedminster, which today is a southern suburb of Bristol, was until the late 19th century a town in its own right, and one with quite a history. It is thought to date back to at least the Iron Age, was certainly inhabited in the Roman era, and became a royal manor in Saxon Times. When Prince Rupert sacked the place in the Civil War it was a rural Somerset settlement; a century later coal had been discovered there, leading to an industrial boom that lasted until WWII. The Blitz changed the face and the nature of Bedminster, much of its industry relocated afterwards to other districts, many factories replaced by housing developments, though there are plenty of industrial and light industrial employers still to be seen. The ancient St John’s Church was ruined in the bombing, its grounds now a small park; but the 19th century St Paul’s in the district remains, as does the elegantly proportioned Zion Chapel opened in 1830. A positive effect of post-war developments was an influx of Italians, bringing a change to the food culture there. Nowadays the population of Bedminster is around 11,000, a far cry from the late Victorian era when it was several times that figure. The area is easily reached by car or by rail: Bedminster is only a mile or so from the end of the M32; and a 10-minute drive from junctions 18 or 19 of the M5; its train station somewhat confusingly isn’t Bedminster (a little outside the area) but Parson Street. It is also crossed by the River Malago, a tributary of the Avon, and by the New Cut of that latter river.
