Winsford is to be found in Cheshire almost equidistant between Manchester and Liverpool, lying on the Cheshire Plain set amongst the lush farmland of the surrounding countryside. Historically it was an agricultural community however the town developed as a result of the large salt deposits that were relatively easy to access. Alongside Northwich Winsford was an important producer of salt and in order to export it the canal system proved to be invaluable, the River Weaver was canalised around the late 18th century and this allowed the salt to be transported to Liverpool for export. In recent times Winsford has grown quite rapidly, with the growth in Liverpool and Manchester many of those residents chose to relocate to Winsford, with good road and rail network the appeal of Winsford was understandable. Today though Winsford is still using its mines – but for an altogether different purpose. Some of those original mines are now being used for deep storage some 150 metres below ground providing an environment that is completely dry, has a constant temperature and humidity and with a high degree of security. There is no doubting though that Winsford enjoys its semi rural location, easy access and good local amenities make this a popular location.
