Widnes is to be found in the North West of England on the northern shores of the River Mersey in between Warrington and Liverpool, Widnes was an important location for travellers for it was here at the Runcorn Gap that travellers could cross the river between Runcorn and Widnes. Widnes became a centre for the production of a number of chemical works and in its heyday boasted works producing soda and iron there were foundries, soap, grease oil and paint works as well as a factory producing nitrogenised bone manure! In keeping with this growth in industry the railways arrived to help transport the produce throughout the country and in 1845 the world’s first canal/ rail dock complex was built at what is today better known as Spike Island. This growth in wealth and respectability saw the building of St Pauls Church in Victoria Square followed shortly by the Town Hall built in the “French Renaissance” style that was popular at this time. Today though Widnes has changed for the better as much of the heavy industry has now gone replaced by modern industrial parks and factories. The local authority have in recent years made great efforts to lose the image that Widnes once endured as a dirty place to live. Today Spike Island is an area of grass and woodland that is used for many outdoor events, whilst its most famous landmark is the Jubilee Bride which replaced the Transporter Bridge that was built in 1905 and of which little remains today.
