Tracing its history back to the Iron Age Prestwich is located to the north of the River Irwell and the name Prestwich is derived from the Saxon meaning “Priest’s Retreat”, however there does not appear to be any mention of it in the Domesday Book, the first documented evidence of the settlement first appearing in 1194. In 1605 the population of Manchester was decimated because of the plague, Prestwich was directly linked to Manchester along, so the story goes, Butterstile Lane, gaining its name because it was here that the residents of Prestwich left supplies of butter on a stile for the townsfolk of Manchester. By 1827 Prestwich had become an important route to Manchester and a new route was created, Bury New Road to facilitate access. This was the Victorian era and together with road construction came the railways and by 1879 the first railways trains were running between Manchester, Whitefield and Bury. It was the ending of the First World War though that saw Prestwich grow at a phenomenal rate with new homes for the returning soldiers seeing much of Prestwich being built on. Today Prestwich is a popular location in which to live, many consider this to be one of North Manchester’s best kept secrets. Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool are all accessible off the relatively new Manchester Orbital motorway, the M60, hence the increasing popularity of the location. In short it offers good local family facilities, a compact town centre and motorway access and it also benefits from easy access to the Metro which takes you directly into the centre of Manchester.
