Once known as Church Hulme today Holmes Chapel is a thriving town that grew in importance because of its geographic location, on the main route between London and Lancaster. The church in the town dates back to the 13th century and the village grew from here and the crossroads on which it is located. The cross roads and church actually form a square and this was home to many fairs and cattle markets throughout its history. By the mid 1700’s the village consisted of around 17 cottages but after a fire in the town just four buildings survived, the Church, the Red Lion and two cottages. The rebuilding of the town was undertaken in the main by a local landowner and today a number of local buildings bear the emblem TBH – the initials of Thomas Bayley Hall who was responsible for much of the rebuilding . Today this village in the heart of Cheshire is home to around 3,000 residents who enjoy a wide range of local amenities as well as benefitting from their rural surroundings which provide an idyllic location for country walks and activities and yet retains good communication links with the major cities of Liverpool, Manchester and Chester.
