Burtonwood lies between St Helens and Warrington and is famous for two things, Burtonwood Beer and its former American Airbase. As home to the American bombers during the Second World War it was responsible for the supply of around 30 other American airbases in the UK and it earned the nickname “Lancashire’s Detroit”. Burtonwoods history goes back to a time when this was mainly a farming community, and at that time it was part of Lancashire, it was from these rural roots that the heart of the brewing industry was founded and is still very much in evidence today. Originally founded in 1867 the brewery in a bizarre twist of fate doesn’t produce Burtonwood Beer here today – Burtonwood Beer is brewed at Marstons in Burton on Trent, whilst here at Burtonwood the beer brewed here today is supplied to third party companies. Burtonwood can trace its history back to the 13th century, the mid 19th century saw the area still reliant on agriculture for trade as towns around Burtonwood grew. Burtonwood though was beginning to change – the Industrial Revolution was to have an effect on the area as more and more people arrived in the area. Today Burtonwood very much retains its village atmosphere and is popular with residents as it is convenient for commuting to Warrington, Manchester and beyond, yet the village still manages to retain its rural aspect on life.
