For many reasons when we talk of Vikings we think that they originally landed in the East of the country – in fact Bromborough lays proud claim to the fact that around 1100 years ago the Vikings actually landed here as it evidenced by the presence of a Viking Cross in the church grounds at St Barnabas church just off The Rake (meaning Lane in the Norse language) Bromborough was an important commercial centre, its proximity to the River Mersey saw it open sea trade routes that were almost as important as Liverpool. In the mid 1800’s the local industry expanded further when a new candle factory was built at Bromborough Pool and ahead of Port Sunlight the owners set about building homes for their employees in the area. Today Bromborough is an important commercial centre on the Wirral with companies such as Unilever and Shell based there. In recent years new developments have included the newly completed Riverside Park located on the banks of the River Mersey aiming to provide in excess of 2000 new jobs in the area underlining the importance of Bromborough. For those who take their leisure seriously then there are the Wirral Country Parks and North Wales, no to mention the Wirral Way as well as numerous leisure complexes, cinemas and shops all within easy reach
