Wivenhoe is an ancient town on the banks of the Colne River in the county of Essex, home to just over ten thousand people. The town has links far back into history when the Romans and Saxons came here, and has an interesting mix of half timbered houses, Victorian and modern buildings, and attractive 18th Century bow fronted cottages that line the Quayside. It was renowned for its fishing fleet, and ship building, and although the fishing fleet has all but gone there are colourful yachts and pleasure craft to be seen along the picturesque waterfront. The town has a vibrant feel with a lively artisan scene of talented artists capturing the quaint streets and waterfront, and writers who have been inspired to put pen to paper. There are many unusual shops that span the centuries and will keep the hungriest of shoppers satisfied, restaurants offering something for everyone, and pubs with a vibrant feel as the student population from the university nearby swells the numbers. Of course there is always the opportunity to take pleasing riverside walks or strolls through the interesting streets which will reward visitors with hidden treasures, from museums and art galleries, to the church of St Mary the Virgin whose tower dates back to the 15th Century.
