Tilbury is a town located on the north bank of the River Thames, in the borough of Thurrock. It is notable for being the location of a deep water port. Henry VIII built riverside Block Houses at East and West Tilbury, which later became Coalhouse Fort and Tilbury Fort. It was at West Tilbury that Queen Elizabeth I gave her famous Spanish Armada speech. Both forts are now open to the public. Tilbury dock was the point of emigration to Australia under the “Ten Pound Poms” scheme which was operated by the Australian government between 1945 until 1972 . Today the port handles a variety of cargo, container and passenger traffic and remains one of Britain's major ports, along with Felixstowe and Southampton. A ferry service to Gravesend operates on the south bank of the river. Near the Dockmaster's office is a memorial to Captain Peter de Neumann who was killed there in an accident on 16 September 1972. East Tilbury is a conservation area of architectural and historical interest due to its links with the British Bata Shoe Company who created the housing estates there in the 1930s. The vast Lakeside Shopping complex with its bars, restaurants and cinema is nearby.
