Stansted Mountfitchet is a village in Essex, on the Hertfordshire border with a population of just under 6,000. It lies 2 miles away from Stansted Airport, junction 8 of the M11 and 30 miles north of London. Being so close to the international airport, Stansted Mountfitchet is very accessible by road, rail (has its own station) and air. There is a choice of guesthouses, a couple of pubs and the lively town of Bishops Stortford is 3 miles away. The village was an Iron Age Fort and Roman, Saxon and Viking settlement (Stansted means “stony place” in Saxon). It acquired the suffix Mountfitchet during the Norman invasion when a Norman baron of that name settled there, building the castle of which there are remains today. Mountfitchet Castle dates from 1066 and is a protected national Historic Monument, though until restoration in the 20th century it lay forgotten and wild after an attack in about 1215. Presently the castle is open daily from March to November and there is 1066 village, which provides a unique experience of life in the 11th century. There is also a tearoom, animals and the House on the Hill Toy Museum. This museum is the largest of it’s kind in Europe, with over 80,000 exhibits, including Princess Diana’s Tracker bike! The village has a working windmill too, which is open to the public once a month. Essex Tourism - 0871 716 2199 Calls cost less than 10p per minute
