Southend on Sea is a resort roughly 40 miles east of central London in Essex. Towns within the Borough include Chalkwell, Eastwood, Leigh-on-Sea, Prittlewell, Shoeburyness, Southchurch, Thorpe Bay, Westcliff-on-Sea and their respective beaches. On the seafront, Southend Pier is the longest iron pleasure pier in the world measuring 1.33 miles to the end. From the Pier, the sand/shingle Jubilee Beach stretches eastwards through to Thorpe Bay. The Pier Museum offers a fascinating insight into the history of this famous landmark - including its many disasters. Adventure Island (the number one 'free admission' theme park in the South East), The Kursaal bowling alley and Casino, and Sea-Life Adventure are all to be found on the pier. In August the Southend Carnival is opened along the Golden Mile with the lighting of the Southend Illuminations which continue until November. Parks and green spaces abound and with an 18-hole golf course and trotting track, Belfairs Park is widely regarded as the flagship green space for the area. Southend Planetarium is the only public planetarium in the South East outside of London, There are three theatres in the town. The Cliffs Pavilion hosts musical concerts, and performances on ice. The most recent theatre is the New Empire Theatre and The Edwardian era Palace Theatre is a grade II listed building built in 1912. The new look Hamlet Court Road offers a mixture of shops, boutiques and restaurants. At the south end of the High Street, The Royals is home to over 30 stores all under one roof, supplemented with regular Farmers' markets, continental markets and special events throughout the year. A new shopping centre is underway at Southend’s Victoria rail station. London Southend Airport supports scheduled flights to Jersey on summer Saturdays and a new terminal and rail station is planned for 2008.
