Manningtree is an interesting market town on the banks of the Stour River nudging the Essex and Suffolk borders, home to nine hundred people. It's surrounded by stunning countryside that was perhaps forever immortalised by Constable who captured the beauty perfectly. It's full of charm, with elegant houses that line the High street whose Georgian facades veil houses from Tudor and Elizabethan times, it was first granted it's Market Charter in 1238 and today continues in that tradition with the colourful markets taking place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The High street has interesting shops for that special find, and two ancient Coaching Inns which hail from days long since past, a stroll along Brook Street and South Street uncovers delightful cottages built by the Weavers who fled from the Netherlands in the 16th Century. Or there is always the Museum which tells an interesting story, whilst the tiny beach sees boats reflected in the water. Famed for it's cloth, and beer production, and the Witch trials carried out by the Witch Finder General Matthew Hopkins, today sees visitors enjoying the river with it's majestic white swans, and attractive countryside, and although the witches have all gone, Manningtree still weaves her magic.
