Harwich in Essex is one of England's ferry ports. The town became a naval base in 1657 and was heavily fortified by Harwich Redoubt, Beacon Hill Battery, and Bath Side Battery. The Royal Navy is no longer present in Harwich but adjacent Parkeston continues to offer regular ferry services to Holland and Esbjerg in Denmark. There’s a Blue Flag beach at Dovercourt, just south of the town. Harwich has two notable "claims to fame", the Mayflower that took the Pilgrim Fathers to America was a Harwich ship, and famous diarist, Samuel Pepys was once its MP. Harwich is highly-regarded in terms of architectural heritage, and the whole of the older part of the town, excluding Navyard Wharf, is a conservation area. There are two lighthouses (called High and Low) that now serve as museums, and many notable Georgian buildings including the Grade 1 listed Guildhall which is now home to the Harwich Town Council. The restored Electric Palace Cinema, built in 1911, is still in use today. Other attractions include the Harwich Lifeboat Museum, and in the 1818 Low Lighthouse on Harbour Crescent, Harwich Maritime Museum, which houses displays on navy history and commercial shipping. The National Museum of Wireless and Television, in the High Lighthouse, has displays of radio and televisions through the ages, and views from the Lantern Room at the very top. Redoubt Fort, on Main Road, is one of the Napoleonic forts that are scattered around this coast. Built in the early 1800's, of a circular shape and approximately 200ft in diameter, it is now an Ancient Monument, the restoration of which began in July 1969 and has continued until the present day. There is a museum and the original guns are on display. Exhibitions include a large number of replica firearms. Battle re-enactments and other events are held during the summer months.
