Great Chesterford and its near neighbour, Little Chesterford, are jointly known as "The Chesterfords". Great Chesterford is situated on the River Cam, approximately 10 miles south of Cambridge and 4 miles north of the market town of Saffron Walden. The land around Great Chesterford has been inhabited for centuries, and there have been many archaeological finds dating as far back as 100,000 B.C. and evidence of a Romano-Celtic Temple which can be found in both Saffron Walden and Cambridge museums. The 'modern-day' village has many old houses of archaeological interest, and the All Saints Village Church, which dates from the 13th century, has had many additions over the years. By 1635 Great Chesterford had grown in importance as a staging post for the Newmarket Races, often used by Charles I. Complaints about gambling and noisy revelry at The Crown House Inn on Newmarket Road eventually led to a ban on Sunday racing. Newmarket Races adhere to the ban to this day. Great Chesterford boasts two pubs as well as the hotel, plus a shop and post office. There are many clubs and societies meeting in the village and a host of social events from steam engine days to grand summer balls.
