Grays, next to the Thames near the Dartford crossing, is some 20 miles to the east of London on the north bank of the River Thames. It is the largest town in the borough of Thurrock which houses the vast Lakeside shopping centre and retail park. There is a bingo hall, cinema complexes, bars and restaurants all within minutes of the shopping complex. Local sites of interest include the Thameside Theatre and the Thurrock History Museum which has extensive galleries on the archaeology and social and industrial heritage of the area, including items on the River Thames. The museum organizes walking tours of the borough in the summer. The now-disused State Theatre in the town centre was apparently used as a location in the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It once housed the town’s cinema. Grays Beach Riverside Park on Thames Road, has a large play area with Britain's biggest play galleon, plus an 18 hole adventure golf course, pdeal go-karts, a children's driving school, skittles, hose hockey, air maze, and a cafe. From the top of the Derby Road Bridge in Grays you can look down to Thurrock Yacht Club, Grays Beach children's playground and the River Thames where large container ships can occasionally be seen travelling up and down. As well as Thurrock Yacht Club, Grays Beach is the site of the local landmark - The Gull, a lightship built in 1860, which has lain on the foreshore for decades and is now in a serious state of dilapidation.
