Frinton-on-Sea is a small seaside town in the Tending district of Essex. The town has over a mile of sandy beach and an area of sea zoned for swimming, sailing, and windsurfing. The shore is lined by a promenade along which are built several hundred beach huts. From the promenade is a long greensward stretching from the boundary with Walton-on-Naze to the Golf Club. Frinton has the reputation of being a ‘conservative’ town with a large number of active churches and lack of pubs. Shopping can be had in Connaught Avenue (once dubbed the "Bond Street" of East Anglia), whilst historic tree lined avenues, coastal walks and the Frinton summer theatre make up the rest of this sedate coastal resort. There is only one pub in Frinton, the Lock and Barrel, which opened in 2000. Frinton is also famous for "The Frinton Gates", railway gates often referred to as a status divide, living "inside the gates" supposedly having more status than living "outside the gates". The Victorian style beach huts along the sea front recall the days when the town was a favourite retreat for the aristocracy. One of Frinton’s many churches occupies a converted cinema.
