Felsted is a village in Essex, situated in the middle of the triangle of the Essex towns of Great Dunmow and Braintree to the north and Chelmsford to the south. All these three towns are connected by old Roman roads, and near to the old Felsted railway station were found the remains of a Roman villa. Felsted is first mentioned in the Domesday Book as a manor. William the Conqueror gave it to the bishop of Bayeux, then to Caen Abbey as a source of income. Lord Richard Rich of Leez Priory was to become Felsted’s greatest benefactor and was later an important developer of the Felsted Church of the Holy Cross, which dates back to Norman times. Felsted is primarily notable for Felsted School, which dates back to the 16th century, and situated in 80 acres of beautiful grounds in the village. Founded in 1564 by Lord Rich, it first occupied the central property in the village which was previously the Guildhall. Felsted holds a week long Arts Festival every March which takes place at the Felsted School. Felsted has a couple of pubs including the Three Horseshoes and The Chequers and Reeves restaurant, situated in a grade II listed 16th century beamed cottage.
