Feering is a village in Essex, situated between Colchester and Witham. It is the crossing point of the River Blackwater and traces of the old Roman London to Colchester road have been found on Feering Hill. The present village bridge was built around 1785 and the arches of an earlier bridge can still be seen. There are more than 40 buildings of architectural, historic or local interest in the village. These include Feeringbury Manor, a 7-acre garden with common and rare plants, wild flower beds and sculptures by Ben Coode-Adams. There is a thriving Community Centre, picturesque village green and quite uniquely, a pair of courts for the fascinating Tudor game of real tennis. The village boasts three pubs: The Sun; The Old Anchor, and The Bell. Large areas of the parish are still agricultural. Until recently orchards supplied fruit for a nearby jam factory. There were fields of strawberries, raspberries and tomatoes which became known as the Flowering Fields of Feering. John Constable stayed in Feering on several occasions with the Rev Walter Wren and drew several drawings whilst staying there, including one of the church porch and another depicting the Vicarage. Feering has close ties with its geographically conjoined neighbour, Kelvedon.
