Epping is a market town 17 miles north of London, in rural Essex. It is surrounded by countryside and borders the ancient Epping Forest, yet is on the Underground network. In 1253 a Charter was granted to hold a weekly market at Epping. Today the High Street market, held on Mondays, is still thriving. The town has major stores in the High Street, as well as smaller retailers. A few timber framed buildings from the 17th century still exist, the oldest being The Black Lion pub. There are three tower landmarks which can be seen from many miles away. They are the Gothic 1872 Water Tower and the tower of the parish church, St. Johns, built in 1909, as well as the more recent tower of the Civic Offices built in 1990. Epping is known as ‘the town of the forest’, which lies south of the town. There are 6,000 acres of ancient forest, and an additional 2,000 acres that have been acquired to protect the area from development. Copped Hall on Crown Hill is a Georgian mansion currently being restored. It has landscaped parkland and offers guided tours, events and open days. Nearby entertainment includes the Lee Valley Leisure Centre at Picketts Lock. Essex Tourism - 0871 716 2199 Calls cost less than 10p per minute
